RUGIMSP began in 2019 when Regis was asked by Padre Sergio Godoy, a Guatemalan priest, to help start a primary care medical clinic in the community he founded, Ciudad de la Esperanza. Ciudad de la Esperanza is a school and community center built next to the local landfill outside of Coban, Guatemala. There is a group of marginalized indigenous Mayans who live around the dump, sorting through refuse to find recycled items to sell as their source of income. Ciudad de la Esperanza educates more than 450 children grades K-12 and serves approximately 2000 families.
Regis took its first medical team to Ciudad de la Esperanza in March 2020 and has gone annually since. The team consists of 10 volunteer medical professionals. The medical director is Regis alumna and pediatrician Dr. Lauri Pramuk, class of ’93. The team also consists of 10-12 Regis pre-med or pre-dental undergraduate students and Regis nursing students. The students have weekly classes with the medical team, learning about Guatemala, medical ethics of service trips, medical triage and primary care topics throughout the academic year. They fundraise for their travel and also raise enough money each year to be able to purchase pharmaceuticals for the year for the clinic and to support the salary of a Guatemalan pediatrician to serve the community year-round
