While Regis University is a home for our whole community, the Romero House Program offers a path to a deeper sense of fellowship. The Romero House was founded in the fall of 1993, just a few short years after the shocking massacre of six Jesuits and two innocent women at the University of Central America in 1989. At its core, the creation of Romero House was a response to the horror of this violence—a space to find meaning through service and spirituality and community, and to do so among others similarly called.
Though the program remains true to the pillars it was founded upon (drawn from the teachings of Oscar Romero: service, solidarity, simplicity, spirituality, justice and most importantly, community), it has grown and evolved with each new class of residents to pass through its doors. Today the Romero House Program offers five to eight Regis undergrads the opportunity to spend an entire academic year living in community with each other while completing weekly service and exploring topics more deeply. Romero House offers the opportunity to study liberation theology and the history of American involvement in the major conflicts of recent Central American history in a mandatory class designed to complement the strengths of the program.
The students are award room and board in a house just off campus but are challenged to live simply and in solidarity with the poor. Further, over the winter break, each Romero House class journeys to El Salvador and Guatemala on pilgrimage, where they have the chance to experience homestays with locals, engage in deep conversations around the history of colonial violence, visits site of historic significance and so much more.
Donations received through Regis Gives go directly towards keeping the wonderful student leaders drawn to the Romero House Program fed and supported as they navigate the perils and joys of community living. Moreover, funds will also help to finance our next pilgrimage trip, lowering the real traveling expenses of our students. Please consider leaving a donation of just a few dollars—every little bit helps to preserve the long legacy of this amazing program.
