Learn more about the student experience: 🦊

“I think photography is a valuable part of the student experience. Between all the academic pressures, it’s refreshing to have a class that lets you tap into your creativity, express yourself, and enjoy the process. Photography gives you the chance to see the world in a different way, helping you grow personally while developing your artistic skills.” -Nessa M., Fall 2024 photo student

“I used my own camera for this class, but it was very basic and limited my ability to participate fully. It did not have the proper settings for all the different functions and concepts we were learning in class, so I had to improvise slightly. I was still able to participate in a meaningful way, however, if the University were able to provide a camera, I would have been able to get more experience, education, and creative exploration out of the class.” - Acacia S., Fall 2024 photo student

“Having access to a camera provided by the university would allow me to practice photography and grow my love for it to great extents. Being able to save those $500-$3,000 that's needed by a college student, allows me to live stress free about having made a big purchase, to then be grow my photography skills without worry. And this motivates me to purchase my own camera in the future, already having the experience of photography on a camera that was provided by the university.” -Johnny E., first-year student

Students learn a variety of image capturing possibilities: this semester, they learn how to make pictures using homemade pinhole cameras in the darkroom!
Students work in teams to expose light sensitive darkroom paper to light, making pictures using one of the earliest camera technologies: the pinhole camera.
Exploring different technologies is an important part of the creative process in photography classes. For most students, this is their first time using analog materials in the darkroom!
